About Me

The Person Behind the Practice

Hello, I’m Genine

I’m an accredited counsellor and qualified hypnotherapist, with more than 25 years experience supporting children, young people, adults and families across health, education and wellbeing.

For me, counselling isn’t about having all the answers or telling you what you should do. It’s about creating a relationship where you feel genuinely heard and understood, giving you the space to explore what’s happening for you and supporting you to find your own way forward.

I’m naturally warm and down-to-earth in the way I work. You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to say or where to begin — we can work that out together.

My Journey

My work with people began more than 25 years ago, supporting children and families within Health Visiting teams. I worked closely with parents through the early years of family life, supporting child development, emotional wellbeing and the many challenges that can come with becoming and being a parent. During this time, I also trained in and delivered parenting programmes including Webster-Stratton and the Solihull Approach.

As my own family grew, my work naturally moved into School Nursing and education. I spent many years supporting children, young people and their families with emotional health and wellbeing, before going on to work within schools as a Family Support Practitioner and Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Those roles gave me an understanding of people that goes far beyond counselling theory. I have supported families through anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, parenting challenges, safeguarding concerns, loss, trauma and times when life has simply felt overwhelming.

My interest in therapeutic work eventually led me to train in hypnotherapy and then counselling and psychotherapy. During my counselling training I worked therapeutically with young people in schools, and later volunteered with a specialist charity supporting survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

I have also worked within health and wellbeing consultancy, providing wellbeing support and training to adults, parents, young people and professionals. Alongside this, I have undertaken additional training in areas including menopause, trauma, safeguarding, mental health and neurodiversity.

All of these experiences have shaped the therapist I am today. They have taught me that behind every difficulty is an individual person with their own experiences, relationships, strengths and way of understanding the world.

My Approach

I work pluralistically, which simply means I don’t believe that one type of therapy suits everyone. We are all different, and what you need from counselling may also change as we work together.

I draw primarily from Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy, alongside other therapeutic approaches and resources where appropriate.

My approach is also holistic. I’m interested in the whole person — not simply the difficulty that has brought you to counselling, but your experiences, relationships, emotions and what is happening in the wider context of your life.

I also have a particular interest in neurodiversity and bring both professional and lived experience to this area. I recognise that there is no single way to experience autism, ADHD or neurodivergence, and I adapt the way I work to the individual rather than expecting the individual to adapt to therapy.

Above all, I aim to offer a space that feels safe, welcoming and free from judgement — somewhere you can be yourself.
